Overview
Bertone is a legendary Italian automotive design house and coachbuilder that has been revived as a boutique manufacturer of ultra-exclusive hypercars. The company focuses on combining its historic design language with modern high-performance engineering and sustainable fuel technologies for the luxury collector market.
History
Founded in 1912 by Giovanni Bertone in Turin, the company began as a carriage repair and construction shop before transitioning to the automotive industry. Under the leadership of Giovanni's son, Nuccio Bertone, the firm became a global powerhouse in car design and manufacturing during the mid-20th century, creating iconic models such as the Lamborghini Miura, the Lancia Stratos, and the Alfa Romeo Montreal. Throughout this period, Bertone operated both as a design consultancy and a contract manufacturer, producing vehicles for major OEMs at its Grugliasco plant. However, the company faced significant financial decline in the early 21st century due to a shift in the automotive industry away from outsourced coachbuilding, leading to the sale of its manufacturing assets to FIAT in 2009. The brand eventually went through bankruptcy in 2014, resulting in the dormant state of the marque for several years. In 2022, the brand was acquired by Mauro and Jean-Franck Ricci of the Ideactive group, who successfully relaunched the manufacturer with a focus on limited-edition hypercars. This new era for Bertone was inaugurated with the reveal of the GB110, a mid-engine hypercar that pays homage to the brand's historic wedge-shaped design heritage. Today, the company operates as a luxury OEM, positioning itself at the intersection of Italian styling excellence and innovative engineering solutions, including the use of waste-to-energy fuel technologies.
