Overview
Andretti Formula E is a founding competitor in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and serves as the electric racing arm of the broader Andretti Global organization. The team specializes in high-performance electric vehicle operations, software-driven energy management, and sustainable motorsport technology within the world's premier all-electric racing series.
History
Andretti Formula E was established as one of the original entrants for the inaugural 2014-2015 Formula E season, initially competing as Andretti Autosport. Founded by racing legend Michael Andretti, the team was a pioneer for American involvement in electric motorsport. During the early seasons, the team operated as a privateer, often developing its own powertrain solutions before the series moved toward manufacturer-led competition. In 2018, the team entered a major technical partnership with BMW, becoming the BMW i Andretti Motorsport works team. This collaboration lasted until the end of Season 7 (2021), during which the team secured multiple wins and established itself as a technical powerhouse. When BMW exited the series, Andretti pivoted to a customer model, demonstrating exceptional operational efficiency by maintaining competitive performance despite the loss of factory status. In 2023, the team entered a new era by partnering with Porsche to utilize the Porsche 99X Electric powertrain for the Gen3 regulations. This partnership yielded immediate results, with driver Jake Dennis winning the 2022-2023 Drivers' World Championship. This victory marked the first time a customer team in Formula E won the title, solidifying Andretti's reputation for superior race engineering and strategy. Currently, the team operates under the rebranded 'Andretti Global' banner, a change implemented in late 2023 to reflect the organization's expansion into new racing disciplines and its bid to enter Formula 1. The team continues to lead from its headquarters in Indiana while maintaining a significant operational presence in Europe to support the international race calendar.
