Overview
Atalanta Motors is a British boutique automotive manufacturer dedicated to producing handcrafted, bespoke modern interpretations of classic 1930s British sports cars. The company combines pre-war aesthetic styling and driving dynamics with modern engineering, reliability, and materials. It occupies an ultra-exclusive niche catering to collectors and classic motoring enthusiasts desiring traditional coachbuilding blended with contemporary performance.
History
Atalanta Motors was originally established in December 1936 in Staines, Middlesex, by Alfred Gough and Eric Sanders. The marque quickly gained acclaim as one of the most technologically advanced British sports car manufacturers of the interwar era, pioneering features such as four-wheel independent coil-spring suspension, adjustable damping, full hydraulic brakes, pre-selector gearboxes, and lightweight alloy castings. However, the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 halted production prematurely after only roughly 21 to 22 vehicles had been built, leaving the brand dormant for decades. In 2011, British enthusiast and businessman Martyn Corfield formally revived the marque by founding the modern iteration of Atalanta Motors Ltd. Corfield sought to preserve the design philosophy and athletic spirit of the original pre-war cars while incorporating over 75 years of automotive engineering progress to make them usable and dependable in modern road conditions. In 2012, the revived company unveiled the Atalanta Sports Tourer prototype, earning widespread interest across the historic and classic car community. A fully realized production prototype was showcased at prestigious events, including the Salon Privé Concours d'Elegance and the 2014 Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace. Today, Atalanta operates as an ultra-exclusive coachbuilder producing commissioned, bespoke recreations of the Sports Tourer in very limited annual volumes.
