Overview
Charge Cars is a British technology and bespoke electric automotive manufacturer that specializes in re-engineering iconic classic sports cars as brand-new, luxury battery electric vehicles. Rather than converting existing vintage donor vehicles, the company constructs its cars around newly manufactured licensed steel bodyshells integrated with modern electric powertrains. It positions itself in the ultra-luxury restomod and coachbuilt EV specialist market with highly exclusive, limited-production runs.
History
Charge Cars was established in 2016 in London by Vadim Shagaleev with the goal of combining heritage automotive styling with contemporary electric powertrain technology. The company built its initial proof-of-concept prototype, internal code XP01 (nicknamed 'Sally'), by converting an existing internal combustion engine Ford Mustang, which debuted publicly at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2019 and garnered multiple showcase honors. Following the prototype's reception, Charge Cars shifted away from traditional classic car conversions to building vehicles from scratch. The company partnered with a licensed US fabricator to source brand-new, officially licensed Ford steel bodyshells and collaborated with EV developer Arrival to adapt its modular electric architecture, motor components, and software technology. In early 2020, the company moved into its expansion phase, recruiting experienced personnel from luxury and racing marques such as McLaren, notably hiring designer Mark Roberts as Chief Commercial Officer to build out the in-house design, CMF, and digital UX/UI systems. Charge Cars moved into an advanced R&D and bespoke manufacturing facility in Stockley Close, West London, announcing a limited production run of 499 units for its flagship vehicle, 'The '67', prior to undergoing an ownership restructuring and acquisition phase in late 2024 to early 2025.
