Overview
Fang Cheng Bao is a premium Chinese automotive brand owned by BYD, specializing in personalized and professional new energy vehicles. The brand bridges the gap between BYD's mass-market offerings and its ultra-luxury Yangwang sub-brand, focusing on both rugged off-road performance and urban family utility.
History
Fang Cheng Bao, which translates to 'Formula Leopard,' was officially introduced by BYD in June 2023 as a strategic sub-brand to target the growing demand for specialized, high-performance new energy vehicles. The brand was designed to leverage BYD's proprietary DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, which combines body-on-frame construction with advanced hybrid technology to provide superior off-road capability and electronic torque distribution. The brand's first model, the Bao 5, launched in November 2023, marking its entry into the competitive off-road SUV market. Following its initial launch, the brand faced significant operational challenges, including a competitive smear campaign and internal friction regarding pricing strategies that led to protests from early adopters. In response, the company pivoted its sales strategy, moving away from a direct-sales-only model to include traditional dealership recruitment to expand its market reach. This strategic shift, combined with a broader product portfolio, helped the brand scale its monthly sales significantly by 2025. By late 2024 and 2025, Fang Cheng Bao expanded its product strategy by introducing the 'Tai' series, which targets the urban family market, complementing its original 'Bao' off-road series. With the introduction of models like the Tai 3, Tai 7, and the full-size Tai 9, the brand has successfully diversified its lineup to cover segments ranging from compact SUVs to full-size family vehicles, solidifying its position within the BYD brand matrix.
