Overview
Genesis is the luxury vehicle division of the South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group. The brand focuses on delivering 'Athletic Elegance' through a lineup of premium sedans and SUVs designed to compete with established European and Japanese luxury marques. Since its inception as a standalone brand in 2015, Genesis has rapidly gained acclaim for its distinctive design language, high-quality interiors, and emphasis on personalized customer service.
History
The origins of Genesis date back to 2004 when Hyundai Motor Company initiated a project to develop a world-class luxury sedan. This effort culminated in the 2008 launch of the Hyundai Genesis sedan, which was greeted with critical acclaim and won the North American Car of the Year award. The success of this model, along with the subsequent Equus flagship, proved that Hyundai could successfully compete in the premium segment and laid the groundwork for a dedicated luxury brand. On November 4, 2015, Genesis was officially announced as a standalone luxury brand. The transition involved separating the Genesis and Equus models from the Hyundai lineup, rebranding them as the G80 and G90, respectively. To define the brand's identity, Hyundai recruited high-profile talent from European luxury manufacturers, including designer Luc Donckerwolke and engineering expert Albert Biermann, ensuring the vehicles possessed both aesthetic appeal and competitive driving dynamics. Between 2017 and 2020, the brand expanded its sedan lineup with the compact G70 and significantly broadened its market appeal by entering the SUV segment with the GV80 and GV70. These SUVs quickly became the brand's top-selling models, particularly in the North American market. During this period, Genesis also refined its 'Athletic Elegance' design language, characterized by the iconic Crest Grille and Two-Lines lighting signature, which helped the brand stand out in a crowded luxury market. In 2021, Genesis declared an ambitious electrification strategy, announcing that all new models launched starting in 2025 would be pure electric vehicles. The brand debuted its first dedicated EV, the GV60, built on the E-GMP platform, followed by electrified versions of the G80 and GV70. By 2023, Genesis celebrated the milestone of reaching 1 million cumulative global sales, solidifying its position as a major player in the global luxury automotive landscape. Today, Genesis continues to expand its global footprint, with a strong presence in Korea, North America, the Middle East, and growing operations in Europe and China. The brand is currently focused on achieving full electrification by 2030 and becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2035, while continuing to experiment with high-performance concepts under its 'Magna' program.
