Overview

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer specializing in SUVs, pickup trucks, and new energy vehicles. The company maintains a global presence with a focus on intelligent mobility, off-road performance, and sustainable energy solutions.

History

Founded in 1984 in Baoding, Hebei, Great Wall Motor began as a small manufacturer partly owned by the local government. Under the leadership of Wei Jianjun, who took the helm in the 1990s, the company underwent significant restructuring and privatization in 1998, setting the stage for its expansion into the domestic and international markets. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, GWM solidified its position as China's largest producer of SUVs and pickup trucks. The company aggressively expanded its brand portfolio, launching specialized marques such as Haval, WEY, TANK, and ORA to target diverse consumer segments ranging from luxury off-roaders to mass-market electric vehicles. In recent years, GWM has pivoted toward a globalized strategy, investing heavily in R&D for intelligent driving, smart cockpits, and hydrogen energy. The company has established a global manufacturing footprint, including the historic milestone of becoming the first Chinese OEM to mass-produce electric vehicles overseas at its Rayong facility in Thailand.
