Overview

Hyundai Motor Company is a leading global automotive manufacturer headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, currently ranking as the world's third-largest carmaker by production volume. The company produces a wide array of passenger vehicles, SUVs, and commercial vehicles, with a strategic focus on hydrogen fuel cell technology and the 'Ioniq' electric vehicle brand.

History

Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung as an automotive division of the larger Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. Its first vehicle, the Cortina, was released in 1968 through a collaboration with Ford Motor Company. Seeking technological independence, Hyundai hired former British Leyland executives in the mid-1970s to develop its first proprietary model, the Pony, which debuted in 1975 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro and became South Korea's first mass-produced car. In the 1980s, Hyundai aggressively expanded into international markets, entering the United States in 1986 with the affordable Excel, which set an industry record for first-year import sales. Despite early success, the brand faced reliability challenges that led to a major strategic pivot in the late 1990s. Following the acquisition of Kia Motors in 1998, Hyundai underwent a 'Quality First' transformation under Chairman Chung Mong-koo, backed by an industry-leading 10-year warranty program that successfully rebuilt the brand's global reputation. In the 21st century, Hyundai transitioned from a budget-oriented brand to a leader in design and technology. The company launched its luxury brand, Genesis, in 2015 and established the high-performance 'N' division shortly after. Modern milestones include the development of the E-GMP dedicated electric platform, the success of the Ioniq series, and diversification into robotics following the acquisition of Boston Dynamics. Today, Hyundai is a pioneer in sustainable mobility, investing heavily in hydrogen energy through the Nexo and future urban air mobility solutions.
