Overview

Lola Yamaha ABT is a professional racing team and technical partnership competing in the FIA Formula E World Championship. The entity combines the chassis and engineering heritage of Lola Cars with the powertrain expertise of Yamaha Motor and the operational experience of ABT Sportsline to develop high-performance electric racing vehicles.

History

Lola Cars was originally founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley and grew to become one of the most prolific racing car manufacturers in the world, with success in Le Mans, IndyCar, and Formula 1, before entering administration in 2012. In 2022, the brand was acquired and revived by British businessman and racer Till Bechtolsheimer, who pivoted the company toward sustainable motorsport and advanced engineering. In early 2024, Lola announced a strategic technical partnership with Yamaha Motor Company to enter the FIA Formula E World Championship as a manufacturer. This marked Yamaha's high-profile return to four-wheel racing, focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art 350kW electric powertrain. To manage the trackside operations and race strategy, the duo partnered with ABT Sportsline, one of the most successful teams in Formula E history. The team is making its competitive debut in the 2024/2025 season (Season 11), coinciding with the introduction of the Gen3 Evo regulations. This project serves as a laboratory for both Lola and Yamaha to develop next-generation electric vehicle technologies, including high-efficiency motors, silicon carbide inverters, and sophisticated energy management software that can eventually transition to road-going applications.
