Overview
Lunaz is a British automotive technology company based in Silverstone that specializes in the restoration and electrification of classic luxury cars and heavy industrial vehicles. The company is a pioneer in the 'upcycling' movement, aiming to preserve heritage design while integrating proprietary electric powertrains and sustainable materials.
History
Founded in 2018 by David Lorenz and Jon Hilton, Lunaz was established at Silverstone Park to address the challenge of future-proofing classic cars in a zero-emissions world. Jon Hilton, formerly the Technical Director at Renault F1, brought high-performance engineering expertise to the firm, leading the development of a proprietary modular electric powertrain. The company initially gained global attention by electrifying prestigious models from Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, and Aston Martin. In 2021, the company expanded its scope by launching Lunaz Applied Technologies (LAT). This division focuses on the 'industrial upcycling' of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), specifically refuse collection trucks. By converting existing fleets to electric power, Lunaz offers a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to purchasing new electric vehicles, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of municipal fleets. The company's growth was accelerated by significant investment from high-profile figures, including David Beckham, the Barclay family, and the Dallal family. In 2022, Lunaz moved into a new 200,000-square-foot facility at Silverstone, which serves as the world's largest facility for the upcycling and electrification of classic and industrial vehicles. This expansion enabled the company to scale production and R&D capabilities for both its luxury and commercial divisions.
