Overview
Mahindra Racing is the motorsport and electric vehicle development arm of India's Mahindra Group, competing as a registered manufacturer in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The outfit designs, engineers, and tests high-performance all-electric powertrains that serve as an R&D testbed for road-going EV innovations under its 'Race to Road' initiative. Operating out of the UK motorsport valley, it holds the distinction of being the sole Indian manufacturer and a founding competitor in Formula E.
History
Mahindra Racing was initially established in 2011 to spearhead the Mahindra Group's entry into international motorsport via Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The team competed in the 125cc two-stroke category before transitioning into the four-stroke Moto3 class, where it acted as both a factory squad and an engine/chassis constructor supplying the Mahindra MGP3O motorcycle to customer teams like Aspar. In 2017, the company made the strategic decision to exit Moto3 entirely to redirect all capital and engineering capabilities toward electric motorsport. In late 2013, Mahindra Racing signed on as one of the ten founding teams of the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship for the 2014–15 season. Initially competing as a customer outfit running the standardized Spark-Renault SRT_01E chassis, Mahindra swiftly transitioned into an accredited manufacturer by developing its proprietary electric powertrains starting with the M2Electro in Season 2. The team achieved breakthrough success in Season 3 (2016–17) with the M3Electro, scoring multiple podiums and a maiden victory at the Berlin E-Prix with Felix Rosenqvist. Through Formula E's Gen2 and Gen3 eras, Mahindra Racing established technical collaborations with global tier-1 suppliers such as ZF Friedrichshafen and Tech Mahindra to co-develop bespoke inverters, electric motors, and advanced software architectures. Today, operating from its headquarters in Banbury, UK, the team fields the Mahindra M10Electro and M11Electro race cars in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, maintaining its position as a central pillar of Mahindra's global electrification strategy.
