Overview
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the largest automobile manufacturer in India, commanding a market share of approximately 42% as of 2022. A subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corporation, the company specializes in fuel-efficient small cars, sedans, and utility vehicles tailored for the Indian mass market.
History
Maruti Suzuki was incorporated in February 1981 as Maruti Udyog Limited, a joint venture between the Government of India and Suzuki Motor Corporation. The partnership was established to modernize the Indian automotive sector and provide affordable transportation to the growing middle class. The company's first production facility opened in Gurugram in 1982, and in 1983, it launched the iconic Maruti 800, which became a symbol of personal mobility in India for decades. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the company expanded its manufacturing capacity and product range, introducing successful models like the Zen, WagonR, and Swift. In 2003, the company listed on the Indian stock exchanges following a successful IPO. By 2007, the company was renamed Maruti Suzuki India Limited, reflecting the deepening integration with its Japanese parent company. The Indian government eventually divested its entire stake in the company, making it a private subsidiary of Suzuki. In the current decade, Maruti Suzuki has reached unprecedented production milestones, achieving a record volume of 2.34 million units in FY 2025-26. The company has also diversified its portfolio to include premium offerings through its NEXA dealership chain and has significantly increased its focus on SUVs and green technology. Today, Maruti Suzuki is the most critical component of Suzuki's global operations, contributing a major share of the parent company's global sales and production volume.
