Overview

Mercedes-Benz is a leading global luxury automotive manufacturer headquartered in Germany, specializing in premium passenger cars and commercial vans. The company is renowned for pioneering automotive safety, engineering excellence, and technological innovation as it transitions toward a software-driven, all-electric future.

History

The heritage of Mercedes-Benz traces back to 1886, when Karl Benz patented the Motorwagen, widely considered the first gasoline-powered automobile. Concurrently, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were developing independent motorized transport. In 1926, the two competing companies—Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft—merged to form Daimler-Benz AG, officially giving birth to the Mercedes-Benz brand name. Throughout the mid-20th century, the company established itself as a global icon of luxury and performance, producing legendary models like the 300 SL 'Gullwing' and introducing critical safety features such as the crumple zone, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), and airbags. The post-WWII era saw massive global expansion and the establishment of a reputation for indestructible engineering quality. Following a complex corporate history that included a merger with Chrysler (1998–2007), the company focused on refining its premium segment leadership. In December 2021, the company underwent a historic restructuring, spinning off its heavy commercial vehicle division (Daimler Truck) and renaming the parent entity Mercedes-Benz Group AG to focus exclusively on luxury passenger vehicles and vans. In recent years, Mercedes-Benz has committed to an 'Electric Only' strategy where market conditions allow, investing heavily in its own operating system (MB.OS) and a dedicated global battery production network. Today, the brand continues to lead the high-end market while aggressively decarbonizing its entire value chain.
