Overview
Perodua is Malaysia's largest automobile manufacturer, specializing in compact, high-value, and energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs). Established as the country's second national car project, it maintains a dominant market position through a strategic partnership with Japan's Daihatsu Motor Company.
History
Perodua, officially Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd, was established in 1993 as Malaysia's second national car manufacturer. The company was formed to complement the first national car project, Proton, by focusing on the compact car segment and expanding the country's industrial capabilities. In 1994, Perodua launched its first model, the Kancil, through a technical partnership with Japan's Daihatsu Motor Company. This partnership proved foundational, as Daihatsu provided the platforms, engines, and manufacturing expertise that allowed Perodua to produce reliable, low-cost vehicles tailored for the Malaysian market. Over the following decades, Perodua grew rapidly, introducing successful models like the Kenari, Kelisa, and the iconic Myvi hatchback, which became a long-standing best-seller in Malaysia. The company expanded its manufacturing footprint in Rawang, establishing two major plants: Perodua Manufacturing and Perodua Global Manufacturing. Today, Perodua is Malaysia's market leader by sales volume and a pioneer in Energy-Efficient Vehicles (EEVs). Under its 'Perodua Smart Build' blueprint, the company is currently transitioning toward electrification and advanced safety technologies while maintaining a commitment to high local content and ecosystem development.
