Overview
Praga is a historic Czech automotive manufacturer that has transitioned from mass-market production to the boutique manufacturing of high-performance hypercars, race cars, and luxury motorcycles. The company focuses on extreme lightweight engineering and aerodynamic efficiency, positioning itself as a specialist in the ultra-high-performance and motorsport markets.
History
Founded in 1907 in Prague, Praga was originally established as a joint venture between the First Czech-Moravian Machine Works and Ringhoffer. By the 1920s and 30s, it had grown into Czechoslovakia's largest automotive manufacturer, producing a wide range of passenger cars, trucks, and buses, including the popular Piccolo and Lady models. Following World War II and the subsequent nationalization of the industry, Praga's production was redirected toward heavy commercial vehicles and military equipment. The most notable product of this era was the Praga V3S, an exceptionally rugged all-terrain truck that became a staple of Eastern Bloc logistics for over half a century. After the fall of communism, the brand underwent several transitions and ownership changes, eventually focusing on specialized engineering. In the 2010s, Praga pivoted back to performance vehicles with the launch of the R1, a dedicated carbon-fiber racing car that has since become a staple in various endurance and sprint racing series globally. In recent years, the company has expanded its portfolio into the luxury lifestyle sector. In 2022, Praga unveiled the Bohema, a multi-million dollar, road-legal hypercar developed in collaboration with former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean. Today, the brand continues to leverage its racing heritage and Czech engineering prowess to compete in the highest echelons of the automotive industry.
