Overview
Radical Motorsport is a prominent British manufacturer specializing in open-cockpit race cars and high-performance track-day vehicles. They are one of the world's largest producers of dedicated racing cars, known for their high power-to-weight ratios and advanced aerodynamic engineering.
History
Founded in 1997 by Phil Abbott and Mick Hyde, Radical Motorsport was established with the goal of creating lightweight sports cars that offered a professional racing experience at an accessible price point. Their first car, the 1100 Clubsport, utilized a Kawasaki motorcycle engine and established the brand's philosophy of using high-revving powertrains and significant aerodynamic downforce. This formula proved successful, leading to the creation of the SR3 in 2002, which remains the company's most successful and iconic model to date. In the mid-2000s, Radical pushed the boundaries of performance by developing its own V8 engines, created by joining two Suzuki Hayabusa cylinder heads onto a custom crankcase. This led to the SR8, a car that famously held the production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for over a decade. This era also saw the expansion of Radical's racing series into a global network, providing a ladder for amateur drivers to progress into professional-level competition. In 2020, the company launched the SR10, featuring a turbocharged Ford EcoBoost-based powertrain specifically tuned for endurance racing and high torque. This model became the fastest-selling car in the company's history, reflecting a shift toward more robust, forced-induction engines for certain market segments. In recent years, the company rebranded from Radical Sportscars to Radical Motorsport to better reflect its comprehensive role in organizing international racing championships. Today, Radical Motorsport operates from a purpose-built facility in Peterborough, UK, and has produced over 2,800 cars since its inception. The company continues to evolve its product line with the XXR generation of cars, focusing on improved cooling, enhanced aerodynamics, and advanced data logging capabilities for both private owners and professional racing teams.
