Overview
Renault is a leading French multinational automobile manufacturer that produces a diverse range of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and electric vehicles. A pioneer in the European EV market, the brand focuses on accessible innovation, design-led mass-market mobility, and a strategic shift toward high-value technology and circular economy practices.
History
Renault was founded in 1899 by Louis, Marcel, and Fernand Renault, initially gaining fame through successes in early motor racing and the production of the 'Taxi de la Marne' during WWI. Following the second World War, the company was nationalized by the French government, becoming the Régie Nationale des Usines Renault, which led to the development of iconic mass-market models like the 4CV and Renault 4 that mobilized postwar France. The late 20th century saw Renault's privatization and a period of rapid international expansion, most notably the 1999 formation of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. This strategic partnership allowed for shared platforms and technologies, significantly increasing global scale and competitiveness. During this era, Renault also acquired Dacia and Samsung Motors, broadening its global footprint into emerging markets and budget segments. In the 21st century, Renault became an early leader in electric mobility with the launch of the Zoe and maintained a strong presence in Formula 1 to drive technological prestige. However, the company faced significant management crises and financial pressures in the late 2010s, exacerbated by leadership scandals and the global shift in automotive demand. Under current leadership, Renault launched the 'Renaulution' strategic plan in 2021. This plan shifted the company's focus from volume to value, emphasizing electrification through the 'Ampere' EV unit and circular economy initiatives. Today, Renault is transforming into a tech-centric automotive group, reviving classic nameplates like the Renault 5 and Renault 4 as modern electric vehicles.
