Overview
Scout Motors is an American automotive manufacturer focused on designing and building rugged, all-electric trucks and SUVs. The company operates as an independent brand backed by the Volkswagen Group, aiming to revive the historic Scout nameplate for the modern electric era.
History
Scout Motors was established in September 2022 as an independent company under the Volkswagen Group umbrella to develop a new generation of electric off-road vehicles. The brand draws inspiration from the iconic International Harvester Scout, which was produced from the 1960s through the early 1980s. By leveraging Volkswagen's manufacturing expertise while maintaining its own entrepreneurial agility, the company set out to create a distinct American automotive identity. In 2023, the company announced a $2 billion investment to build a dedicated production facility in Blythewood, South Carolina, designed to support an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles. Throughout 2024 and 2025, the company focused on scaling its workforce and establishing its corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, while maintaining engineering operations in Novi, Michigan. In October 2024, Scout Motors officially debuted its first two concept vehicles, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck. As of 2026, the company is in the final stages of facility construction and workforce training, with full-scale production and market launch scheduled for 2027.
