Overview
Tata Motors is India's leading automobile manufacturer and a global leader in commercial vehicles, ranking among the top three in the Indian passenger vehicle market. The company is a key member of the USD 165 billion Tata Group and has established itself as the market leader in India's electric vehicle (EV) segment through its focus on sustainable and smart mobility solutions.
History
Founded in 1945 as the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), the company initially focused on manufacturing locomotives and engineering products. In 1954, it entered the commercial vehicle sector through a 15-year technical and financial collaboration with Daimler-Benz of Germany, a partnership that established the foundation for its long-term dominance in the Indian truck and bus market. By the mid-1980s, the company began challenging international competitors with the launch of the Tata 407 in 1986, which outperformed several Indo-Japanese light commercial vehicles. The 1990s marked Tata Motors' aggressive expansion into the passenger vehicle market. In 1991, it launched the Tata Sierra, India's first indigenously developed passenger vehicle, followed by the Tata Estate and the Tata Sumo. A defining moment in the company's history occurred in 1998 with the introduction of the Tata Indica at the Geneva Motor Show; as India's first fully indigenous passenger car, it quickly became a market leader and demonstrated the company's prowess in design and localization. In 2008, Tata Motors significantly expanded its global footprint by acquiring the iconic British brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Company. This acquisition transformed the company into a multinational automotive powerhouse with a presence in premium segments. During the same period, the company launched the Tata Nano, aimed at providing an affordable four-wheel alternative for millions, though the project eventually faced commercial challenges. In recent years, Tata Motors has pivoted toward electric mobility and safety-centric engineering. The launch of the Nexon EV in 2020 solidified its position as the leader in India's transition to sustainable transportation. In 2024, the company announced a strategic demerger of its commercial and passenger vehicle businesses into two separate listed entities, effective by late 2025, to allow each business to pursue independent growth strategies and enhance shareholder value.
