Overview
Volkswagen is a prominent German automotive manufacturer and the cornerstone brand of the Volkswagen Group, one of the world's largest automakers by volume. It specializes in high-volume passenger vehicles and is currently undergoing a massive strategic transformation toward electric mobility and software-driven transportation.
History
Volkswagen was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front under the Nazi regime with the goal of producing an affordable 'people's car.' Ferdinand Porsche designed the original prototype, known as the KdF-Wagen, which later became the iconic Beetle. However, the onset of World War II shifted the factory's focus to military production, and the mass-market civilian vehicle was delayed until after the conflict. Following the war, the company's Wolfsburg factory was placed under British military administration. Major Ivan Hirst played a critical role in reviving production, convincing the British Army to order thousands of vehicles to sustain the plant. By the 1950s and 1960s, the Beetle and the Type 2 (Transporter) became global symbols of West Germany's economic recovery and counter-cultural movements, establishing Volkswagen as a dominant global brand. In the early 1970s, facing declining Beetle sales and technological stagnation, Volkswagen pivoted to water-cooled, front-wheel-drive designs. This era saw the introduction of the Golf, Passat, and Scirocco, which successfully modernized the brand's identity. During this period, the company also began expanding its portfolio, acquiring Audi and later forming the foundation of the multi-brand Volkswagen Group. The 21st century brought both expansion and crisis. While the company grew into a global powerhouse with a massive presence in China, it was rocked by the 2015 'Dieselgate' emissions scandal. This event led to multi-billion dollar fines and a radical shift in corporate strategy. Today, Volkswagen is aggressively phasing out internal combustion engines in favor of the ID. family of electric vehicles, built on the modular MEB platform, aiming to become the global leader in e-mobility.
