Overview
Alpine Formula 1 Team is the high-performance racing division of the Renault Group, competing in the FIA Formula One World Championship. The team functions as a technical laboratory to pioneer engineering solutions and materials that eventually influence Alpine's road car lineup, positioning the brand as a leader in lightweight and aerodynamic design.
History
The team's foundations were laid in 1981 as Toleman Motorsport, based in Witney and later Enstone, UK. This entity was acquired by the Benetton family in 1986, becoming Benetton Formula, which achieved legendary status by winning the Drivers' World Championships in 1994 and 1995 with Michael Schumacher, along with a Constructors' title in 1995. Renault, having been a long-term engine partner, purchased the team in 2000 and rebranded it as Renault F1 Team for the 2002 season, subsequently winning consecutive championships with Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006. Following a period of ownership by Genii Capital between 2011 and 2015, during which the team competed under the Lotus F1 Team banner, Renault re-acquired the squad as a full works manufacturer in 2016. The team underwent a significant multi-year restructuring to modernize the Enstone facilities and the Viry-Châtillon engine plant. In 2021, the team was rebranded as Alpine F1 Team to spearhead the global relaunch of Renault's dedicated performance brand, Alpine. In the Alpine era, the team secured its first victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon. However, the organization has recently navigated significant management changes and strategic pivots. In late 2024, a major decision was announced to terminate the Renault F1 power unit program at the Viry-Châtillon facility, effectively transitioning Alpine to a customer team status for the 2026 regulation cycle, likely sourcing power units and gearboxes from Mercedes-AMG.
