Overview

Cadillac is a premier luxury vehicle division of General Motors (GM), known for its high-end sedans, SUVs, and technological innovation. It currently serves as GM's leading brand for the transition to electric mobility and advanced driver-assistance systems like Super Cruise.

History

Cadillac was founded in 1902 by Henry Leland from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company, making it one of the oldest automotive brands in the world. Named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit, the company quickly established itself as a leader in precision engineering, winning the Dewar Trophy for its pioneering use of interchangeable parts. In 1909, General Motors acquired Cadillac, positioning it as the conglomerate's top-tier luxury brand. Throughout the 20th century, Cadillac introduced numerous industry firsts, including the first mass-produced V8 engine, the electric self-starter, and the first integrated climate control system. During the 1950s and 60s, the brand became a global symbol of American prosperity, characterized by iconic tail-fin designs and expansive luxury cruisers like the Eldorado. In the early 2000s, Cadillac underwent a brand reinvention through its 'Art and Science' design philosophy, introducing sharper lines and performance-oriented models like the CTS-V to compete with European luxury rivals. Today, the brand is in the midst of its most significant transformation yet, committing to a fully electric portfolio by 2030. This shift is anchored by the Ultium battery platform and the introduction of a new generation of EVs, including the Lyriq and the hand-built flagship Celestiq.
