Overview

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely Holding) is a global automotive powerhouse that operates as one of China's largest privately-owned car manufacturers. The group manages a diverse portfolio of brands including Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, and Zeekr, with a strong emphasis on smart electric mobility and sustainable manufacturing.

History

Founded in 1986 by Li Shufu, Geely originally began as a manufacturer of refrigerator parts before expanding into motorcycle production in the mid-1990s. In 1997, Geely entered the automotive industry, becoming China's first private car manufacturer with the production of the Haoqing model in 1998. The company's early years were defined by rapid growth in the domestic Chinese market, leading to its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2005. A pivotal moment in Geely’s history occurred in 2010 when it acquired Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company for $1.8 billion. This acquisition provided Geely with access to advanced European engineering and safety technology, fundamentally transforming its global reputation. Over the following decade, the group continued its aggressive international expansion, acquiring a majority stake in Lotus Cars, a 49.9% stake in Malaysia's Proton, and becoming the largest individual shareholder in Mercedes-Benz's parent company, Daimler AG. In recent years, Geely has transitioned its focus toward electrification and smart vehicle technology. The launch of the Lynk & Co brand in 2016 bridged the gap between Geely and Volvo, while the 2021 debut of the Zeekr brand targeted the premium electric vehicle segment. Today, the group utilizes its proprietary Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) to unify development across its various brands, positioning itself as a leader in the global shift toward EVs. Geely's current strategy involves a 'Blue Geely Initiative' aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and diversifying into satellite communications and flying cars through its Aerofugia subsidiary. As of 2024, the company operates as a highly integrated global mobility provider with R&D centers and manufacturing facilities spanning across Asia, Europe, and North America.
