Overview
GAC Aion is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer and a subsidiary of the state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group). The company focuses on the research, development, and production of intelligent new energy vehicles, including both mainstream electric models and the premium Hyptec brand.
History
GAC Aion was established on July 28, 2017, as GAC New Energy Automobile, serving as a strategic pivot for the GAC Group to focus on the burgeoning new energy vehicle sector. The company initially operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary, investing heavily in a dedicated smart new energy vehicle industrial park to build its manufacturing capabilities. In November 2020, the company rebranded to GAC Aion, marking its transition to an independent brand identity within the GAC Group portfolio. This period saw the company accelerate its focus on proprietary technologies, including its 'Magazine Battery' safety system and in-house electric drive platforms. Since 2024, GAC Aion has aggressively pursued a global expansion strategy, entering markets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe. This expansion has included the establishment of local partnerships, such as the joint venture with Jameel Motors for the UK market, and the launch of its premium Hyptec sub-brand to compete in higher-end segments.
