Overview
BMW is a premier global manufacturer of luxury automobiles and motorcycles, renowned for engineering excellence and a focus on driving dynamics. The company maintains a leading position in the premium segment through its diverse portfolio of internal combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles under the BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands.
History
BMW's roots trace back to 1916 with the founding of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW), originally focused on aircraft engines during World War I. Following the post-war Treaty of Versailles which restricted aircraft production, the company transitioned to motorcycle manufacturing in 1923 and entered the automobile market in 1928 by acquiring Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. This era saw the development of iconic models like the 328 roadster, which established the brand's performance credentials. Following World War II, BMW factories were heavily damaged and the company struggled for financial survival, briefly producing kitchenware and bicycles before returning to motor vehicles. A major turning point occurred in 1959 when the company faced bankruptcy and potential acquisition by Daimler-Benz; a rescue led by shareholders and investment from the Quandt family secured its independence. This led to the 1962 launch of the 'Neue Klasse' (New Class) 1500, which saved the company and defined its modern identity as a producer of sporty executive sedans. During the late 20th century, BMW expanded its global presence by introducing the core 3, 5, and 7 Series and acquiring the Rover Group in 1994 and the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand in 1998. While most of Rover was later divested, BMW successfully revitalized the MINI brand into a premium sub-compact leader. The company also pioneered the luxury SUV segment with the launch of the X5 in 1999, which significantly boosted its profitability and market reach. In the modern era, BMW has focused on digitalization and electrification, launching the 'i' sub-brand with the i3 and i8 models to lead its technological transition. The company is currently undergoing its most significant transformation yet with the 'Neue Klasse' electric platform, designed to unify its future lineup around a fully digital, sustainable, and circular production model. Today, BMW remains one of the world's most successful premium automakers with a vast global production and sales network.
