Overview

BMW M Team WRT is the premier factory-backed racing operation for BMW M Motorsport, managed by the Belgian engineering firm W Racing Team (WRT). The organization specializes in top-tier endurance racing, including the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, while also operating a high-volume manufacturing division for GT4 machinery.

History

Founded in 2009 by former racing driver Vincent Vosse and entrepreneur Yves Weerts, W Racing Team (WRT) established itself as a powerhouse in sports car racing through a long-standing 13-year partnership with Audi Sport. During this era, the team achieved unprecedented success, securing over 50 titles and major victories at the 24 Hours of Spa and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Their technical expertise led them to expand into the LMP2 prototype category in 2021, where they won the class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on their debut attempt. In late 2022, the team announced a strategic pivot, concluding its relationship with Audi to become the lead factory partner for BMW M Motorsport. This transition was centered on the development and operation of the BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) prototype. Under the banner of BMW M Team WRT, the organization entered the FIA WEC Hypercar class in 2024, representing BMW's return to the top flight of endurance racing at Le Mans. Simultaneously, WRT expanded its footprint through its manufacturing arm, WRT Manufacturing. This division evolved from roll cage production to becoming a primary assembly site for international motorsport programs, most notably serving as the exclusive manufacturer for the Toyota Supra GT4. In 2025 and 2026, the team significantly scaled its operations by establishing a dedicated North American base to take over BMW's factory IMSA GTP program from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Today, BMW M Team WRT is recognized as one of the most operationally complex organizations in motorsport, managing factory programs across two continents while maintaining its manufacturing output. As part of the broader Weerts Group, the team leverages industrial-scale logistics and engineering resources to remain at the forefront of automotive performance technology.
