Overview
Citroën Racing is the specialized motorsport division of the French automaker Citroën, primarily focused on the development, production, and support of rally and circuit racing vehicles. The department is internationally recognized for its historic dominance in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and currently focuses on engineering Rally2 and Rally3 machinery for privateer teams.
History
Citroën's motorsport heritage began in the mid-20th century with the iconic DS models, but the modern racing entity was formally established as Citroën Sport in 1989. Led by Guy Fréquelin, the team initially focused on Cross-Country Rallying, where the ZX Rallye Raid became a legend, securing four Dakar Rally victories between 1991 and 1996 and five consecutive World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies titles. In the late 1990s, the division pivoted toward the World Rally Championship (WRC), leading to one of the most successful eras in motorsport history. Between 2004 and 2012, driver Sébastien Loeb and Citroën Racing secured nine consecutive Drivers' World Titles and eight Manufacturers' Titles using the Xsara, C4, and DS3 WRC models. This period solidified Citroën's reputation as a premier engineering house for gravel and asphalt performance. Following its rally success, the team entered the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2014 with the C-Elysée. The program was a total success, yielding three consecutive Manufacturers' and Drivers' titles (2014–2016) before the brand returned its focus to the WRC with the C3 WRC. However, after a challenging three-year stint and the departure of Sébastien Ogier, Citroën announced its withdrawal from the factory WRC category at the end of 2019. In the current era, Citroën Racing operates under the Stellantis Motorsport umbrella at the Versailles Satory technical center. Its primary mission has shifted to customer racing, producing and supporting the C3 Rally2 and C3 Rally3 vehicles. The division provides comprehensive technical assistance and parts logistics to private teams competing in the WRC2, ERC, and various national championships worldwide.
