Overview

Fiat is an iconic Italian automotive brand and a key subsidiary of Stellantis, specializing in mass-market city cars, family vehicles, and light commercial vehicles. As the highest-volume brand within the Stellantis group, Fiat focuses on urban mobility solutions and is currently transitioning its European lineup toward full electrification.

History

Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) was founded in 1899 by a group of investors, including Giovanni Agnelli, who later became the company's head. The brand quickly became a symbol of Italian industrialization, opening the massive Lingotto factory in 1923 and later the Mirafiori complex. Throughout the mid-20th century, Fiat defined post-war European mobility with affordable, stylish icons like the Topolino and the original 1957 Fiat 500. During the 1960s and 70s, Fiat expanded its portfolio by acquiring legendary Italian brands including Lancia, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati, becoming a global industrial powerhouse. However, the company faced significant financial challenges and quality control issues in the 1990s and early 2000s, leading to a strategic alliance and subsequent merger with the American manufacturer Chrysler Group LLC. In 2014, Fiat S.p.A. was reorganized into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), following the full acquisition of Chrysler. This merger allowed the brand to share platforms and global distribution networks. Under the leadership of Sergio Marchionne, the company streamlined its operations and refocused on the successful 500 family and the professional van segment. In January 2021, FCA merged with the French PSA Group to form Stellantis, one of the world's largest automotive groups. Today, Fiat operates as a core brand within the Stellantis 'Mainstream' cluster, leading the group's sales volumes globally, particularly in Europe and South America, while aggressively pivoting toward an electric-only future for its European portfolio by 2030.
