Overview

KG Mobility is a South Korean automotive manufacturer specializing in SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks. Formerly known as SsangYong Motor, the company is currently transitioning its focus toward electric vehicles and eco-friendly mobility solutions under the ownership of the KG Group.

History

KG Mobility traces its origins to Dong-A Motor, which was established in 1954. The company underwent several ownership changes and rebrandings, most notably becoming SsangYong Motor Company in 1988 after its acquisition by the SsangYong Group. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it established a reputation for rugged 4x4s and SUVs, including the iconic Korando and Musso models. In the early 21st century, the company faced significant financial instability, leading to periods of receivership and ownership by international entities, including SAIC Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra. These years were marked by both technical cooperation and severe fiscal challenges that threatened the company's long-term viability. In 2022, the company was acquired by the South Korean conglomerate KG Group, which provided the necessary capital to stabilize operations. In March 2023, the company officially rebranded as KG Mobility (KGM) to reflect its new strategic direction. Since the acquisition, the company has returned to profitability and is currently executing a long-term plan to launch seven new vehicles by 2030, with a heavy emphasis on electrification and global market expansion.
