Overview

Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance luxury sports cars, often referred to as 'megacars' due to their extreme power outputs. The company is world-renowned for its focus on engineering innovation, vertical integration, and holding multiple production car speed records.

History

Koenigsegg was founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg with the ambition of creating a world-class supercar. After years of development and testing of the CC prototype, the company delivered its first production vehicle, the CC8S, in 2002. This model established the brand's signature 'dihedral synchro-helix' door mechanism and mid-engine layout, immediately setting a Guinness World Record for the most powerful production engine at the time. In 2003, a fire destroyed the company's original workshop, prompting a move to a former Swedish Air Force base in Ängelholm. This location, featuring large hangars and a runway for high-speed testing, remains the company's headquarters today. Over the following decade, Koenigsegg released a series of record-breaking models including the CCR, CCX, and the Agera series, which culminated in the Agera RS becoming the world's fastest production car in 2017. The company has consistently pioneered automotive technologies, such as the world's first production carbon fiber wheels, the 'FreeValve' camless engine technology, and the 'Direct Drive' system found in the Regera, which eliminates a traditional gearbox. These innovations have allowed the brand to compete with much larger manufacturers while maintaining a boutique, artisanal production scale. In recent years, Koenigsegg has entered a new phase of growth with the introduction of the Jesko and the Gemera, the latter being the world's first four-seater megacar. The opening of the 'Gripen Atelier' in 2023 expanded their production capacity significantly, marking a transition from a low-volume specialist to a more established player in the ultra-luxury segment while retaining its core focus on extreme performance and bespoke engineering.
