Overview

KTM AG, a subsidiary of PIERER Mobility AG, is an Austrian manufacturer renowned for high-performance motorcycles and the X-BOW line of lightweight sports cars. The company's automotive division, KTM Sportcar GmbH, specializes in track-focused and road-legal supercars that utilize carbon fiber monocoques and advanced racing technology.

History

The company traces its roots to 1934, when Hans Trunkenpolz opened a metalworking shop in Mattighofen, Austria. By 1953, the company officially became Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen (KTM), beginning serial production of motorcycles. Throughout the late 20th century, KTM established itself as a global leader in off-road and motocross racing, though it faced financial restructuring in the early 1990s that split the brand into several independent entities. In 2008, KTM made its first major move into the automotive industry by unveiling the X-BOW at the Geneva Motor Show. Developed in collaboration with Kiska Design, Audi, and Dallara, the X-BOW was the first production car to feature a fully carbon fiber monocoque. This launch established KTM Sportcar GmbH as a niche manufacturer of radical, 'Ready to Race' vehicles. Over the next decade, KTM expanded the X-BOW lineup from the original open-cockpit 'RR' and 'R' models to include the GT4 and GTX racing variants. These models achieved significant success in European GT racing, further validating KTM's engineering capabilities in the four-wheel sector. In 2022, KTM launched the X-BOW GT-XR, a road-legal supercar based on the GT2 racing platform. This model represented a shift toward the luxury performance market, featuring a closed cockpit and enhanced electronics while maintaining the brand's signature lightweight philosophy. Today, KTM AG remains a dominant force in both the motorcycle world and the specialized lightweight sports car market.
