Overview
Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is a prestigious Italian manufacturer of high-performance luxury sports cars and SUVs, headquartered in Sant'Agata Bolognese. As a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group through its Audi division, the brand is globally recognized for its aggressive design language, powerful V10 and V12 engines, and leadership in the super-luxury automotive segment.
History
Founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini, a successful tractor manufacturer, the company was born from a desire to create a refined grand tourer that could surpass established rivals like Ferrari. The brand's early success was cemented by the 1966 Miura, which featured a mid-engine layout that became the standard for all subsequent supercars. Throughout the 1960s, the company established itself as a pioneer of technical innovation and bold styling. The 1970s and 1980s were decades of financial turbulence for the company, resulting in several changes of ownership. Following the global oil crisis, Ferruccio Lamborghini sold his remaining interest in the company in 1974. The firm eventually fell into bankruptcy in 1978 and was later managed by the Mimran brothers before being acquired by Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Despite these corporate shifts, the company produced iconic models like the Countach and the LM002. In 1998, Lamborghini entered a new era of stability and growth when it was acquired by the Volkswagen Group and placed under the stewardship of Audi AG. This acquisition provided the necessary capital and engineering resources to modernize production and quality control. The subsequent launch of the Murciélago and the Gallardo marked a significant commercial turnaround, broadening the brand's appeal and increasing annual production volume significantly. In recent years, Lamborghini has undergone a massive expansion, most notably with the 2018 launch of the Urus, the world's first 'Super SUV.' The Urus became the most successful model in the company's history, driving record-breaking sales and revenue. This growth has allowed the manufacturer to invest heavily in its 'Direzione Cor Tauri' roadmap, which focuses on the hybridization and eventual electrification of its entire product range. Today, Lamborghini is transitioning toward a sustainable future while maintaining its performance heritage. The 2023 launch of the Revuelto, a plug-in hybrid V12 flagship, and the 2024 debut of the Temerario, represent the brand's commitment to high-performance electrified vehicles (HPEV). The company continues to break sales records, delivering over 10,000 vehicles annually for the first time in its history in 2023.
