Overview
Leapmotor is a prominent Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer that focuses on the design and production of smart electric vehicles with a high degree of vertical integration. The company develops nearly all its core hardware and software in-house, positioning itself as a technology-driven competitor in the mid-to-high-end mainstream automotive market.
History
Founded in December 2015 by Zhu Jiangming, a co-founder of the security giant Dahua Technology, Leapmotor was established with the goal of achieving full-domain in-house research and development. The company launched its first production car, the S01 electric coupe, in 2019, followed by the T03 micro-car in 2020, which became a significant sales driver due to its affordability and smart features. In 2021, the company expanded into the SUV segment with the C11, and in 2022, it introduced the C01 sedan, which was notable for being the first mass-produced vehicle to feature Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) technology. Leapmotor's trajectory changed significantly in October 2023 when Stellantis NV announced a €1.5 billion investment for a 20% stake in the company. This partnership led to the creation of 'Leapmotor International,' a joint venture that leverages Stellantis's global distribution network to sell Leapmotor vehicles outside of China. By mid-2024, the company had begun assembling the T03 model at Stellantis's Tychy plant in Poland to navigate shifting trade regulations and tariffs in the European market. Today, Leapmotor continues to expand its 'Leap 3.0' architecture, launching new models like the C10 and C16, which are designed specifically for global appeal and high-tech integration.
