Overview
Li Auto Inc. is a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer that specializes in the design, development, and production of premium smart electric vehicles. The company is a pioneer in the commercialization of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and is currently expanding its portfolio to include high-voltage battery electric vehicles (BEVs) tailored for family users.
History
Li Auto was founded in April 2015 by Li Xiang, a prominent Chinese entrepreneur who previously established the automotive web portal Autohome. Originally known as Leading Ideal Inc., the company focused on addressing the 'range anxiety' associated with pure electric vehicles by developing a proprietary range-extension system. This technology uses a small internal combustion engine to generate electricity for the battery, allowing for longer driving ranges without frequent charging stops. The company's first production model, the Li ONE, entered volume production in November 2019. The six-seat premium SUV quickly gained traction in the Chinese market, positioning Li Auto as a major player alongside other 'new energy' startups. In July 2020, the company rebranded to Li Auto Inc. and completed its initial public offering on the Nasdaq, followed by a dual primary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2021. Between 2022 and 2024, Li Auto significantly expanded its product lineup with the introduction of the L-series SUVs, including the L9, L8, L7, and L6. These models integrated advanced features such as the 'Magic Carpet' air suspension and multi-screen spatial interaction systems. During this phase, the company also began its transition toward a dual-platform strategy, developing dedicated BEV platforms to complement its successful EREV offerings. In 2024, Li Auto launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Li MEGA MPV, marking its entry into the high-power charging BEV segment. The company continues to invest in in-house core technologies, including autonomous driving systems, high-voltage battery platforms, and AI-driven smart cabin solutions. Today, Li Auto is recognized as one of the top-selling premium electric vehicle brands in China, consistently achieving high delivery volumes and expanding its national sales and service network.
