Overview

Lister Motor Company is a British low-volume manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars and bespoke tuning of Jaguar-based vehicles. The company is renowned for its historical racing pedigree and its modern production of ultra-high-performance SUVs and coupes, positioning itself as Britain's oldest surviving racing car manufacturer.

History

Founded in 1954 by Brian Lister in Cambridge, the company rose to prominence with the legendary Lister-Jaguar 'Knobbly,' a sports racer that dominated tracks in the late 1950s driven by icons like Archie Scott Brown. The original era of the company focused on innovative chassis design and engineering, utilizing powerplants from Jaguar and Chevrolet to compete at the highest levels of international motorsport including Le Mans. Following a period of dormancy, the brand was revitalized in 1986 under the leadership of Laurence Pearce. This era saw the development of the Lister Storm, a V12-powered supercar that became a mainstay in GT racing during the 1990s and early 2000s, winning the FIA GT Championship in 2000. The Storm remains one of the fastest four-seat grand tourers ever produced, cementing Lister's reputation for extreme performance. In 2013, the company was acquired by Lawrence Whittaker and his father Andrew, who also own the warranty provider Warrantywise. This acquisition led to the formation of the Lister Motor Company Ltd and a return to production with a series of authentic continuation models of the Knobbly and Costin racers, built to original specifications using traditional methods. In the modern era, Lister has expanded its portfolio to include the 'Bespoke' program, which re-engineers current Jaguar models. Notable releases include the LFT-666 and the Lister Stealth, the latter of which was marketed as Britain's fastest SUV. The company continues to operate as a specialist manufacturer, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary performance engineering.
