Overview

Lola Cars is a legendary British racing car manufacturer and engineering firm specializing in high-performance chassis development and sustainable motorsport technologies. Recently revitalized under new ownership, the company focuses on delivering advanced powertrain and aerodynamic solutions, headlined by its entry into the FIA Formula E World Championship.

History

Lola Cars was founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley in Bromley, England, and quickly established itself as a dominant force in global motorsport. During the 1960s and 1970s, Lola became one of the most prolific racing car constructors in the world, producing the iconic T70 sports car and playing a foundational role in the development of the Ford GT40. The company achieved massive success in American open-wheel racing, securing numerous Indianapolis 500 victories and multiple CART championships. Following a period of financial instability in the late 1990s after a failed Formula 1 project, the company was acquired by Martin Birrane. Under Birrane's stewardship, Lola regained its status as a premier supplier for various racing categories, particularly in the Le Mans Prototype (LMP) classes and junior formulae like Formula 3000. However, shifting market dynamics and the loss of key supply contracts led the company to enter administration in 2012, effectively pausing manufacturing for a decade. In June 2022, British businessman and racer Till Bechtolsheimer acquired the Lola brand, its extensive intellectual property, and the remaining assets. The revival centered on a new vision: transforming Lola into a leader in sustainable motorsport, focusing on electrification, hydrogen power, and advanced materials. This new era is marked by a relocation to a technical base in Silverstone and a strategic move toward becoming a technology provider rather than just a chassis builder. In 2024, Lola announced its official return to world-class competition as a registered manufacturer in Formula E for the Gen3 Evo era. In technical partnership with Yamaha Motor Company, Lola is developing its own bespoke electric powertrain. This project serves as the flagship for the company’s broader mission to integrate high-performance engineering with zero-emission technologies for both racing and future road-going applications.
