Overview
McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is the bespoke division of McLaren Automotive, specializing in the design, engineering, and execution of highly personalized luxury supercars and ultra-exclusive limited-edition vehicles. It serves as an in-house coachbuilder for elite clientele, offering services ranging from custom paint and interior finishes to the development of one-off, ground-up vehicle commissions.
History
MSO's origins trace back to the early 1990s with the establishment of the McLaren Customer Care program, originally created to provide specialized maintenance, service, and upgrades for the 106 units of the McLaren F1. As owners began requesting more extensive personalization for their F1s, the team evolved beyond a service department into a dedicated customization unit capable of handling complex engineering requests and unique material applications. In 2011, at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, McLaren Automotive officially rebranded the division as McLaren Special Operations to coincide with the rollout of the MP4-12C. This move allowed the brand to offer structured personalization across five distinct tiers: MSO Defined, MSO Bespoke, MSO Limited, MSO Heritage, and MSO Programmes. This framework enabled the division to scale from simple accessory upgrades to the management of intensive track-focused driver programs and historic vehicle restorations. Throughout the 2010s, MSO demonstrated its capacity for full vehicle development with projects like the one-off McLaren X-1 and the track-only P1 GTR. The division's role became increasingly central to McLaren's commercial strategy, managing the production of 'Ultimate Series' models such as the Speedtail and Elva, which featured significant bespoke engineering and hand-finished craftsmanship at levels not possible on the standard production line. Today, MSO operates from a specialized facility in Woking, near the main McLaren Technology Centre, where it continues to push the boundaries of automotive materials and design. Recent highlights include the development of the Solus GT, a track-only realization of a virtual concept car, and the North American exclusive Sabre. As McLaren transitions toward hybrid and electric powertrains, MSO remains the primary vehicle for the brand's most profitable, low-volume, and technically ambitious projects.
