Overview
MG Motor is a British-born automotive brand owned by the Chinese state-owned manufacturer SAIC Motor. It specializes in affordable mainstream vehicles, with a strategic focus on accelerating the transition to electric mobility through high-value hatchbacks, SUVs, and roadsters.
History
MG (Morris Garages) was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber in Oxford, England, initially as a producer of tuned versions of Morris cars. The brand became globally renowned for its lightweight, affordable sports cars, most notably the T-Series and the MGB, which made MG the world's best-selling sports car brand for much of the mid-20th century. Ownership shifted frequently during the post-war era, moving through the British Motor Corporation (BMC), British Leyland, and eventually the Rover Group. Following the collapse of MG Rover in 2005, the brand's assets were acquired by Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC), which was subsequently merged into SAIC Motor in 2007. This merger marked a pivotal shift in the company’s history, as production moved from the historic Longbridge plant in Birmingham to advanced manufacturing hubs in China and Southeast Asia, although engineering and design functions retained a significant presence in the United Kingdom. In the modern era, SAIC has successfully repositioned MG as a leader in affordable electrification. The 2022 launch of the MG4 EV, built on a dedicated electric platform, served as a major disruptor in the European market, challenging established manufacturers on both price and technology. In 2024, MG celebrated its centenary by launching the Cyberster, its first purpose-built electric sports car, signaling a return to its heritage of performance vehicles.
