Overview
Mitsuoka Motor is a unique Japanese automotive manufacturer and coachbuilder known for producing limited-run, design-focused vehicles with retro-inspired aesthetics. The company operates as Japan's 10th authorized passenger car manufacturer, specializing in hand-built modifications of existing production platforms.
History
Mitsuoka was founded in 1968 by Susumu Mitsuoka in Toyama, Japan, initially starting as a sheet metal and painting business. The company transitioned into vehicle development in 1981, launching the 'BUBU' series of 50cc microcars, which marked its entry into original vehicle manufacturing. In 1996, Mitsuoka achieved a significant milestone when its 'Zero-1' sports car passed Japanese crash-testing regulations, officially establishing the company as a recognized passenger car manufacturer. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Mitsuoka gained international attention for its 'fashion car' business model, which involves re-bodying mass-produced vehicles—such as the Nissan Micra or Mazda MX-5—to resemble classic British or American luxury cars. Notable models like the Viewt and the eccentric Orochi solidified the brand's reputation for quirky, non-conformist design. Today, the company operates under three primary business pillars: original car development, the 'BUBU' imported car dealership network, and the sale of high-value imported vehicles. With a focus on craftsmanship, Mitsuoka continues to produce limited-edition models, such as the Rockstar and Buddy, maintaining its niche position as a boutique manufacturer that blends traditional hand-assembly with modern automotive platforms.
