Overview

Morgan Motor Company is a boutique British manufacturer specializing in hand-built sports cars that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern powertrain technology. The company is world-renowned for its coachbuilding techniques, specifically the use of ash wood frames and hand-beaten aluminum panels.

History

Founded in 1909 by H.F.S. Morgan in Malvern Link, the company began with the production of innovative three-wheeled vehicles designed to offer high-performance motoring at a lower tax rate. The Morgan Three-Wheeler remained the company's core product until the mid-20th century, establishing a reputation for speed and mechanical simplicity. In 1936, Morgan introduced its first four-wheeled model, the 4/4, which became one of the longest-running production models in automotive history. Following World War II, the company introduced the Plus 4 and later the Plus 8 in 1968, the latter utilizing the Rover V8 engine. These models solidified Morgan's status as a purveyor of classic British sports cars. Despite the industry moving toward mass production and automation, Morgan maintained its traditional factory on Pickersleigh Road, continuing to employ skilled craftsmen to hand-build every vehicle to customer specification. In the early 2000s, Morgan embraced modernization with the Aero 8, which featured a bonded aluminum chassis and a BMW V8 engine, marking the start of a long-standing technical partnership with BMW. This era demonstrated that Morgan could integrate contemporary safety and performance standards without losing its heritage aesthetic. The 3-Wheeler was successfully reintroduced in 2011, capturing a new generation of enthusiasts. A significant turning point occurred in 2019 when the Morgan family sold a majority stake to the Italian private equity firm Investindustrial. This investment facilitated the development of the 'CX-Generation' bonded aluminum platform, which currently underpins the company's core four-wheeled models. This transition allowed for significantly improved dynamics and the integration of modern electronic architectures. Today, Morgan continues to produce cars from its historic Malvern site, focusing on the Plus Four, Plus Six, and the newly launched Super 3. The company remains committed to its 'bespoke' philosophy, offering nearly infinite customization options while navigating the challenges of future electrification and tightening global emissions standards.
