Overview
Omoda Jaecoo is a dual-brand automotive entity established by the Chinese state-owned manufacturer Chery Automobile to serve global markets outside of China. The brand portfolio is strategically divided: Omoda focuses on futuristic 'Art in Motion' design and technology for younger urban consumers, while Jaecoo targets the 'off-road lifestyle' segment with a focus on rugged, premium SUVs.
History
Omoda and Jaecoo were conceived as the cornerstone of Chery Automobile's 'Global 2.0' expansion strategy, aiming to move the parent company's brand image from budget-oriented to lifestyle and tech-centric. Omoda originated as a vehicle series, with the Omoda 5 (C5) debuting in 2022. Due to strong international reception, Chery elevated Omoda to an independent brand and launched its sister marque, Jaecoo, at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. The two brands are typically marketed together under the 'O&J' umbrella in international territories like Europe, Southeast Asia, and South Africa. In 2024, the brand reached a critical milestone by entering the European Union market, notably through a joint venture in Spain to utilize a former Nissan factory in Barcelona for local assembly. This move was designed to circumvent logistical costs and potential trade barriers while positioning the brand as a local player in the European market. By late 2024, the brand had established presence in over 33 countries with aggressive dealership expansion plans. Throughout 2025, Omoda Jaecoo accelerated its powertrain diversification, introducing the Super Hybrid System (SHS) across its lineup to complement its battery-electric (BEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) offerings. This period saw the launch of larger flagship models such as the Omoda 9 and Jaecoo J8, moving the brand further into the premium mainstream territory. As of early 2026, the brand has surpassed one million cumulative global sales, making it one of the fastest-growing automotive marques in recent history.
