Overview
Peugeot Sport is the high-performance and motorsport division of the French manufacturer Peugeot, now part of Stellantis. It is dedicated to developing world-class competition vehicles for endurance racing and rallying, while also engineering the Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE) line of high-performance electrified road cars.
History
Founded in October 1981 by Jean Todt as Peugeot Talbot Sport, the division was initially created to manage the brand's entry into the World Rally Championship. They achieved immediate legendary status with the 205 Turbo 16, which dominated the Group B era by winning the Manufacturers' and Drivers' titles in 1985 and 1986. Following the cancellation of Group B, the team successfully transitioned to cross-country rallying, winning the Dakar Rally four times between 1987 and 1990. In the early 1990s, Peugeot Sport turned its attention to endurance racing with the 905, which secured back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1992 and 1993. This success was followed by a stint as an engine supplier in Formula 1 from 1994 to 2000, partnering with teams like McLaren, Jordan, and Prost GP. While the F1 program yielded multiple podiums, it never achieved the championship heights of their previous rally and endurance efforts. The 2000s saw a return to the WRC with the 206 WRC, winning three consecutive manufacturers' titles from 2000 to 2002. Later in the decade, the division developed the diesel-powered 908 HDi FAP, which famously broke Audi's dominance at Le Mans in 2009. Financial constraints led to a sudden withdrawal from endurance racing in 2012, though the division continued to support customer rally programs and occasional high-profile projects like the 208 T16 Pikes Peak. Today, operating under the Stellantis group, Peugeot Sport has returned to the top tier of international motorsport with the 9X8 Hypercar in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The division has also expanded its focus to high-performance road cars with the introduction of the Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE) sub-brand, emphasizing the transition to electrified performance and hybrid technology.
