Overview

Pininfarina S.p.A. is an iconic Italian automotive design house, coachbuilder, and engineering consultancy renowned for styling many of the world's most famous sports cars and luxury automobiles. While historically a large-scale contract manufacturer for global OEMs, the company has repositioned to focus on bespoke coachbuilding, low-volume hypercars, styling, and engineering services. In partnership with sister brand Automobili Pininfarina under parent Mahindra & Mahindra, it crafts ultra-exclusive, coachbuilt, and electric hypercars.

History

Pininfarina was founded in Turin, Italy, in 1930 by Battista 'Pinin' Farina as Carrozzeria Pinin Farina. From its beginnings, the atelier focused on artisanal coachbuilding, producing handcrafted aerodynamic bodies on chassis from Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati. Following World War II, Pininfarina gained worldwide fame with the revolutionary Cisitalia 202 in 1947, a landmark automobile hailed as sculpture in motion and preserved in New York's Museum of Modern Art. In 1951, the firm began an enduring partnership with Enzo Ferrari, becoming Ferrari's primary design partner for over six decades and shaping legendary vehicles such as the 250 GT, Daytona, Dino, F40, Testarossa, and Enzo. Throughout the late 20th century, led by Battista's son Sergio Pininfarina, the company expanded beyond design into high-volume contract automotive assembly and engineering. The company opened modern facilities including the Cambiano styling centre and the San Giorgio Canavese production plant, manufacturing niche production runs for mainstream and luxury OEMs such as the Cadillac Allanté, Alfa Romeo Spider, Peugeot 406 Coupé, and Fiat 124 Spider. In 1972, Pininfarina established Italy's first full-scale wind tunnel dedicated to full-size automotive aerodynamic research. The global financial crisis of 2008 and shifting OEM strategies away from outsourced contract manufacturing precipitated severe financial difficulties for the firm, prompting an exit from mass contract manufacturing around 2010–2011 to refocus exclusively on design, bespoke low-volume projects, and engineering. In December 2015, Indian multinational Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a controlling interest in Pininfarina S.p.A. Today, Pininfarina designs across automotive, industrial, and architecture sectors, and collaborates on ultra-exclusive bespoke hypercars such as the Battista.
