Overview

Polaris Slingshot is a distinct three-wheeled moto-roadster marque produced by American powersports manufacturer Polaris Inc. Featuring an open-air cockpit, side-by-side seating, and a single rear drive wheel, it occupies a unique niche between high-performance sports cars and motorcycles. The vehicle is engineered to deliver an accessible, engaging on-road driving experience without doors or a traditional roof.

History

Polaris introduced the Slingshot in July 2014 as a 2015 model-year vehicle, marking the company's ambitious foray into the reverse-trike roadster segment. Initially conceived to expand Polaris's presence from snowmobiles and off-road vehicles into dedicated on-road recreation, early production took place in Spirit Lake, Iowa, before expanding into Polaris's broader North American manufacturing network. The first generation was powered by a General Motors-sourced 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Over its initial model years, Polaris expanded the Slingshot portfolio with upgraded trims such as the SL and SLR, introducing higher-specification infotainment displays, premium alloy wheels, and an optional integrated fiberglass roof shield known as the Slingshade. Despite strong enthusiast appeal, the early generation faced minor recalls related to steering components and required varied motorcycle license endorsements depending on state and national jurisdictions. In 2020, Polaris executed the most significant redesign in the vehicle's history by replacing the GM powertrain with its proprietary in-house engineered 2.0-liter ProStar four-cylinder engine producing over 200 horsepower. Alongside this engine update, Polaris introduced the 'AutoDrive' automated manual transmission, which removed the barrier of manual-only shifting and substantially expanded the brand's customer demographic. Celebrating over a decade of production, the Slingshot lineup has continued to evolve with specialized editions such as the Slingshot R and the limited-edition Slingshot 10. Today, the Slingshot stands as an established performance product line within Polaris's On-Road vehicle portfolio.
