Overview

Polestar is a Swedish premium electric vehicle manufacturer that focuses on design-led, high-performance sustainable mobility. Originally the performance division of Volvo, it now operates as a standalone brand positioned as a competitor to Tesla and established luxury marques in the global EV market.

History

Polestar originated in 1996 as Flash Engineering, a Swedish racing team competing in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. In 2005, the team was sold and renamed Polestar Performance, subsequently becoming Volvo's official partner for performance optimization and racing. Volvo Cars eventually acquired the performance and software division of Polestar in 2015, while the racing team remained independent and was renamed Cyan Racing. In 2017, Volvo Cars and its parent company, Geely Holding, announced that Polestar would be relaunched as a standalone brand dedicated to high-performance electric vehicles. This shift was marked by the introduction of the Polestar 1, a low-volume plug-in hybrid performance grand tourer with a carbon fiber body, which served as a halo car for the brand's design language. Following the Polestar 1, the brand transitioned to fully electric powertrains with the launch of the Polestar 2 in 2019, a mass-market fastback designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model 3. The company went public on the Nasdaq in June 2022 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Gores Guggenheim, providing capital for its rapid model expansion. Currently, Polestar is expanding its portfolio beyond the Polestar 2 to include a range of SUVs and performance cars, including the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4. Despite its Swedish heritage and headquarters, the brand leverages the manufacturing scale and technological resources of the Geely Group, utilizing production facilities across China, the United States, and eventually South Korea.
