Overview
The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is the works racing division of Porsche AG competing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The team serves as a high-performance laboratory for developing and testing electric vehicle technologies, particularly in areas like battery management, powertrain efficiency, and software-defined performance, which directly inform the development of Porsche's road-going E-Performance models.
History
Porsche announced its intention to join the Formula E championship in July 2017, coinciding with its strategic exit from the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship. This shift marked a fundamental realignment toward electromobility. The team spent 2018 and much of 2019 developing its inaugural electric race car, the Porsche 99X Electric, utilizing the expertise of the Weissach-based engineers who had previously worked on the 919 Hybrid program. The team officially debuted in Season 6 (2019/2020) at the Diriyah E-Prix, where André Lotterer secured a podium finish in the brand's very first race. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting its maiden season, Porsche established itself as a competitive force, focusing on refining the integration of its bespoke powertrain with the spec Spark chassis. Early seasons were characterized by consistent point finishes and the accumulation of critical data regarding energy recovery and thermal management. In 2022, during Season 8, the team achieved its first victory with a historic 1-2 finish at the Mexico City E-Prix, led by driver Pascal Wehrlein. This milestone validated Porsche's internal development of its electric motor, inverter, and software. The transition to the Gen3 era in 2023 saw Porsche emerge as a dominant technical force, not only as a works team but also as a powertrain supplier to the Avalanche Andretti customer team, which won the Drivers' Championship using Porsche hardware. In the current Gen3 era, the team continues to push the boundaries of charging speeds and regenerative braking technology. Porsche has committed to the Formula E platform through at least Season 12 (2025/2026), viewing the series as the ultimate competitive environment to accelerate the performance of the 800-volt technology found in road cars like the Taycan. The team's evolution reflects Porsche's broader goal of achieving a carbon-neutral value chain by 2030.
