Overview
Proton Holdings Berhad is Malaysia's first national automotive manufacturer, specializing in the design, production, and distribution of passenger vehicles. Since its 2017 partnership with Geely, the company has shifted its focus toward modern SUVs and energy-efficient technology to maintain its dominant position in the Southeast Asian market.
History
Founded in 1983 by then-Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Proton was established as Malaysia's National Car Project to spearhead the country's industrialization. The company's first model, the Proton Saga, was launched in 1985 and became a symbol of national pride, dominating the local market for decades. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Proton expanded its engineering capabilities, notably acquiring a controlling stake in the British sports car manufacturer Lotus Cars in 1996, which allowed the brand to improve the ride and handling characteristics of its domestic models. A pivotal turning point occurred in 2017 when the Chinese automotive giant Geely Holding Group acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton from DRB-HICOM. This strategic partnership granted Proton access to Geely and Volvo's advanced platforms and powertrain technologies, leading to a successful brand revitalization and the introduction of the X-series SUVs. In recent years, Proton has transitioned from a traditional sedan manufacturer to a leader in the SUV segment while expanding its Tanjung Malim plant into a regional automotive hub. Today, Proton is focused on the next phase of its evolution, which includes the integration of electric vehicle (EV) technology and the development of a comprehensive R&D value chain. The company recently launched its eMAS sub-brand to lead its foray into the electrified vehicle market, supported by a new engine assembly line and EV assembly plant in Tanjung Malim.
