Overview

TECHART Automobildesign GmbH is a globally recognized German vehicle modifier and bespoke coachbuilder specializing exclusively in high-performance refinements and complete vehicle builds based on Porsche platforms. Recognized in Germany as an independent vehicle manufacturer with its own registered WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) VIN status, TECHART provides turnkey bespoke supercars alongside modular aerodynamics, powertrain tuning, and handcrafted interior programs. The brand occupies a premier market position among elite European Porsche refinement houses, catering to luxury collectors and performance enthusiasts worldwide.

History

TECHART was founded in May 1987 by Thomas Behringer, Reinhold Mattes, and Matthias Kraus in Fellbach near Stuttgart, Germany. The founders chose the name TECHART as a fusion of technology and art, aiming to bridge technical precision engineering with artistic aesthetic refinement for Porsche automobiles. Within a year of its inception, the company relocated its operational headquarters and production workshops to Leonberg, Germany, situated near Porsche's engineering and manufacturing centers in Zuffenhausen and Weissach. A foundational milestone occurred in 1995 when TECHART was officially granted independent vehicle manufacturer status by the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (Federal Motor Transport Authority), enabling the company to assign its own independent Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) to complete vehicle conversions. In 2001, TECHART achieved widespread international acclaim with the launch of the GTstreet program based on the Porsche 911 (996 Turbo), cementing its reputation for extreme aerodynamics and high-output engine engineering. The brand expanded beyond sports cars in 2004 with the introduction of the TECHART Magnum based on the Porsche Cayenne, virtually creating a new segment for ultra-luxury, high-performance SUV conversions. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, TECHART demonstrated its engineering prowess on track, frequently dominating the annual Tuner Grand Prix and setting long-standing lap records at circuits like the Sachsenring with the 997-generation GTstreet RS. Over the same period, the company broadened its global presence, opening specialized distributor networks and display centers across North America, the Middle East, China, and India, while extending its refinement portfolio to encompass models such as the Panamera (GrandGT), Macan, and electric Taycan. In recent years, TECHART has continued evolving its halo offerings with limited-production complete vehicle lines such as the GTstreet R, GTstreet R Touring, and track-oriented Flyweight programs. Operating from its expanded facilities in Leonberg, the firm pairs advanced CAD/CFD design, wind-tunnel-tested carbon fiber composites, and bespoke in-house saddlery to maintain its standing as one of the preeminent independent Porsche modification brands globally.
