Overview

Workshop 5001 is a boutique Los Angeles-based automotive specialist focused on bespoke, high-end restorations, custom builds, and performance re-engineering of classic air-cooled Porsche models. Founded by former Singer Vehicle Design collaborator Marlon Goldberg, the workshop prioritizes functional engineering, subtler aesthetics, and mechanical precision over overt cosmetic backdating. It occupies an elite niche in the classic Porsche restomod and historic motorsports community, producing highly customized, individually numbered builds.

History

Workshop 5001 was founded in 2014 by Marlon Goldberg alongside technician John Bowman in Los Angeles, California. Goldberg, who had previously trained at East Coast luxury marques, apprenticed under legendary Porsche engine builder Andial, and served as an early project manager at Singer Vehicle Design, sought to establish an independent studio where engineering substance took precedence over exterior ornamentation. Operating out of a converted mid-century manufacturing facility located at 5001 West Exposition Boulevard—which lent the shop its name—the company introduced its philosophy with its flagship commission, "Number 1," an understated 1972 Porsche 911 F-Model sleeper equipped with a custom 3.4-liter twin-plug powerplant. This set the benchmark for their numbered ground-up builds and specialized mechanical packages. Over the ensuing decade, Workshop 5001 developed a reputation for extreme attention to detail, offering bespoke engine development (ranging from high-revving naturally aspirated 3.9-liter strokers to advanced twin-turbocharged platforms), full ground-up restorations, and specialized Sports Purpose Makeovers (SPM). Today, the workshop remains deliberately small-scale and owner-operated, catering to discerning global collectors who prioritize driving dynamics and modern aerospace craftsmanship.
