Overview
SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) is a prominent Chinese automotive joint venture between SAIC Motor, General Motors, and Guangxi Automobile Group. The company specializes in affordable, high-volume passenger and commercial vehicles, with a strong market leadership in China's micro-EV and commercial segments.
History
The roots of the Wuling brand trace back to 1982 with the start of compact vehicle production under the Liuzhou Wuling Automobile entity. In 2002, a landmark joint venture was formed between SAIC Motor, General Motors, and Liuzhou Wuling, establishing SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) to consolidate manufacturing and expand production capacity for the Chinese market. Over the following two decades, SGMW became a dominant force in China's automotive landscape, particularly in the microvan and commercial vehicle sectors. The company leveraged its extensive manufacturing network to become one of the largest automotive producers in China, consistently ranking as a top-tier supplier and manufacturer. In recent years, the company has undergone a strategic transformation toward electrification and globalization. The 2020 launch of urban electric models, such as the Hongguang Mini EV, propelled the brand to international recognition. By January 2025, SGMW achieved a historic milestone by producing its 30 millionth vehicle, solidifying its position as a major global player in the new energy vehicle (NEV) transition.
